Tranny fill plug location on 86 cherokee?
Ujoints done...
Went to fill tranny with gear oil... owners manual shows the fill plug on
the passenger side but I can't find it there and everyone I talk to says
it's on driver's side.
Can't see anything real obvious on driver's side either.
This is a 4 speed 2wd.

I'm guessing you have a Borg-Warner T-4 which should look like
this T-5 and all other BWs with the drain and fill plugs on the
left/passenger side:

Thanks bro, but I must have an oddball... I'll shoot a picture of it and put
it up tomorrow.
This has what looks like it could be a plug on the top at a slight angle
near the shifter stick entry... this big (plug) has a big hex receptacle in
it... looks to be maybe about a half-inch hex receptacle. There are also a
few torx screws on the driver side that could be plugs, but no trivial oil
seepage like you usually see on a fill or drain plug. These are bone dry.
The big (plug) on top does show some oil residue and there's a little oil
residue on the cover where the shifter enters the tranny. There's also what
might be a drain plug on the very bottom of the tranny. It's a big hex head
thing- maybe a 3/4" hex- but not a socket- more like a bolt. The rear of the
tranny is conical, with a "collar" about 3-4 inches in diameter where the
driveshaft yoke enters the tranny... the collar is maybe 1.5 inches deep and
kinda "shields" the shaft that enters the tranny and the tranny itself is
pretty small compared to the one in my camaro when I had it.
I bought this Jeeper new in '86. It was priced at $8997 iirc and I talked
them down some. It was a "price leader" so they could run an ad in the paper
at $8997. It came with no rear seat or A/C lol. I bought a butcherblock
formica countertop and jigsawed it to fit the top where the seat would be. I
have 2 6x9 Pioneer dual cones in that countertop and they sound pretty dang
good with the old 1978-80 vintage Fosgate P-100 pumping them. Had to rebuild
the Fosgate at one point too... replaced every component on the board.
Someone stole the Jeep around 1989 and ripped off my preamp before running
it into a wall but it still kicks..
It's been a really, really good horse and until the engine started idling
rough the other day, it was showing no signs of age as far as the engine
goes. The 2.5 was supposedly a Renault cast iron block so i wonder if the
tranny is Renault...

I think the only Renault engine was diesel. You may have the
Peugeot BA 10/5 Transmission:

Re: Tranny fill plug location on 86 cherokee?
I think the only Renault engine was diesel. You may have the
Peugeot BA 10/5 Transmission:

plug on the left side. (I meant right side in the earlier Borg-Warner
guess.) Or the Asian AX-5:
