Start of engine issues or just time for a REAL tune up.
Hi everyone.
My jeep is doing something new and I just can't seem to shoot this one.
Some back story.. Neglected my tune ups.. blah.. blah.. didn't rebuild my
carb like I should have.. blah blah.. all of a sudden after running a tank
of ultra 94 it started to run like a sack of wet crap. Figure I'll finally
do some maintenance.. So I rebuild my carb, since it was gunked beyond
belief, change air filter, pcv, fuel filter (easy stuff cause I'm lazy see)
etc.
Crank it up and while it still isn't running so hot, (but I have not dialed
my carb back down as everything changes once you clean em) it sounds pretty
strong.. won't idle worth a crap, but again some of that for sure is carb
related. Now as soon as it starts to warm up.. rpms drop and the thing wants
to barely run. Now I'm on the gas when this happens as I had been keeping
the RPM's at about 1700 or so.. it drops to about 1000 RPMs.. feels horrible
then like the timing was off.. misses gives off a pfffft! catchs again.. and
then by that time I'm shutting it down.
Time to do timing as well as mix again? Exactly how does one throw off the
timing.. I've had it set for about 2 years now without a problem and in the
last 6 months I haven't offroaded the beast (cuz I'm po now).
Or.. it this the beginning of the end of my rebuilt - rebuild engine?
I have a spare that I was supposed to be ripping down and building this
summer.... Guess I should get off my butt and get started.
Oh yeah.. 89 YJ with a 4.2 and stock carter carb, nutter by pass so no
computer either.

Re: Start of engine issues or just time for a REAL tune up.
What does your distributor cap look like? I suspect an ignition problem.
Plug wire, spark plug, something like that could be bad. It is unusual for
an engine to go bad "just like that" and I don't really think that tank of
ultra 94 had much to do with it. Did you check the fuel filter?

Re: Start of engine issues or just time for a REAL tune up.
I'm pretty sure I rebuilt the carb rigbt.. Hehe.. Mike is the one who
taught me as we used to be nieghbors. (and I've rebuilt his carb once "as an
exercise" right after he taught me to rebuild mine! Now I will say that I
need his carb tuning skills.. I checked the tubes (and they have been
reamed a bunch of times) and they are ok as well, but no harm in checking
again..
Come to think of it 1'st time I rebuilt the carb gunk plugged up the tube
that had come free after the cleaning. I'll check egain.

Re: Start of engine issues or just time for a REAL tune up.
Remember that EGR valve that had to be worked on in order to pass the
last emissions test Norm?
Do you also remember what happened to the spark plugs after the last
bout of a messed up carb?

Re: Start of engine issues or just time for a REAL tune up.
I changed those plugs.. Now I'm gonna check them all tomorrow when I
get home (tonight is just too busy). And I'll clean them while I'm at
it.
EGR is moving at least. I checked that.. didn't pull it off though..
Guess I'll give at a look at as well.

get home (tonight is just too busy). And I'll clean them while I'm at
it.
EGR is moving at least. I checked that.. didn't pull it off though..
Guess I'll give at a look at as well.

Re: Start of engine issues or just time for a REAL tune up.
Hows the EGR? carboned up? .... check the vacuum control circuits,
typically the same vac. circuit that controls the EGR also controls the
vacuum advance on the dist. etc.

Re: Start of engine issues or just time for a REAL tune up.
Bet the tubes plugged back up like last time...
I don't know why, but I have only got away with it with one plug up once
after cleaning the line last time. Did you clean the chunk of gas line
from the carb to the filter?
Man, we just have shitty gas around here that leaves so much crud behind
when it evaporates....
The line from the filter to the carb almost empties out a lot of times
on a shutdown and collects sludge/rust.

Re: Start of engine issues or just time for a REAL tune up.
I "soaked" that metal gas line while I was cleaning the carb.. I suspect
that I need to re-ream the tubes (as I didn't have anything small enough I
coundn't do it.. though I could blow through them pretty ok). Could be
that like last time a piece of gunk that floating around has found its way
to the idle tubes.. I suspect that it is more than that, but I guess we'll
see.
