Re: whats the stock gears in a 86 cj7?
Mine came stock with 3:31. This is per the axle tag on the rear axle.

Re: whats the stock gears in a 86 cj7?
Forget 5th...
I do a fair bit of highway running to get off road and check my mileage
carefully because of no gas gauge.
I have 33's and 3.31 gears.
If I stay in 4th gear, I am turning 2300 rpm at 70 mph. If I use 5th, I
drop to 1700 rpm or so. This is too low for efficient running and my
gas mileage sucks the big one.
If I stay in 4th, I get a sweet 19 US mpg or 11 L/100 km running at 70
mph. If I use 5th, I go down to 15 mpg or less.
It takes too much gas pedal to adjust for wind and slight hills in 5th
gear so it drinks gas. In 4th a slight twitch on the pedal keeps the
speed even, not a half way or all the way to the floor movement 5th
needs to keep it at an even speed.

my 86 cj7 has 32" tires and stock gears and 5th gear is very low in the
rpm's on the highway and when ever I come up to a hill I have to put it in
4th. do you guys think on a stock 258 if I put a Weber carb and an msd 6t
ignition box on it will be allot better or do I have to regear it to make
5th nice on the highway carmine

Re: whats the stock gears in a 86 cj7?
To be nice on the highway you would have to regear.

I got a weber carb MSD6 offroad ignition box, hedman headers, and still
can't use 5th gear. It's not about the motor, it's more about the gears and
tires. I have 3.31 and 31x10.5 tires.

Re: whats the stock gears in a 86 cj7?
I agree that it's more about the tire height and gears. I have a 5 speed,3.31,
86 Laredo that runs 75 to 80MPH at 2500RPM BUT with 265/70 R 15's (29's). I
used 31's for a spell and had to juggle between 4th and 5th and off road crawl
speed was too fast. I use 5th as low as 45 and up to 100....and way more than
the other gears. As some have said, achange to 3.54, 3.73's or 4.10's for
larger tires will make a big difference. I found that just an inch or two in my
tires did.
