I'm not suggesting that cross rotating the tires is a bad idea, I'm
suggesting it is unnecessary. If you WANT to cross rotate, then fine, put
yourself through the extra work. But if you don't know if you need to cross
rotate, the answer is a resounding NO, you do not need to cross rotate. You
can safely swap the front and rear tires and keep them on the same side.

As an aside,
Most cars these days have that donut-spare that is not meant to be included
in the tire rotation scheme, so pulling the tire from the trunk every few
months and getting it some road time isn't necessary or even desirable.

yourself through the extra work. But if you don't know if you need to cross

Extra work? A 4 tire rotation involves moving 4 tires, crossing or not.
