My neighbor went to the local steel yard and bought some 2x3 box channel and
a length of 6" plate steel. He cut a slot in the box stock, and slipped the
plate into it and welded in in place, then he drilled holes in the plate and
attached to the side of his YJ. The box stock will have to bend in order for
the tub to bend, and he gets the benefit of having a sidestep.

Envision, invision, pretend in your mind, a cross between the Tomkin style
bars and the Sun Performance panels that wrap around the bottom of the
rocker panels.

He used a chopsaw with a metal cutting blade to cut the slot, so the blade
is the same thickness as the plate steel. He also used some sort of drill
bit that cut countersunk holes, then used a tapered screw. His bars extend
from wheel well to wheel well, and he closed them at both ends. Frankly, I
think he could make some money selling them if he could get them poweder
coated somewhere for cheap.

I saw a powder coating outfit @ eastwood tools for a pretty reasonable. I am
trying to practice my welding until I get enough experience to make my
bumpers, rocker panel guards, etc - next expense w/b to purchase the powder
coating outfit.
Was the rocker panel guard strong enough to be a jack point like the ones
made by Sun?

Oh yeah, they are very strong. I suppose you could bend them by jacking in
the exact wrong spot, but you could easily hit the right spot.
