Re: 02 Wrangler Brake Rotor Fiasco
I went thru the same thing on my girlfriends 99 XJ. Swapped the
rotors out, and the damn thing wouldn't move. Took it all back apart,
and low-and-behold the inside pads were actually cracked, from when I
tightened the lug nuts. Couldn't believe it. What a way to waste a
whole weekend, and of course, now I know I need the $100
rotors...life's a beeatch sometimes.

| After 20,000 miles, my rotors are in need of replacement.
| I already know that I am too hard on the brake pedal and I
| have no one to blame but myself for my warped rotors.
|
| I went to AutoZone to get pads and rotors.
| They gave me Aimco 5115 rotors. These are the rotors
| they show in their computer and it's also listed on their
| website as the correct rotors for the 02 Wrangler.
|
| I pull the brakes apart, slap on the new rotors and pads,
| put everything back together and go to back out of the
| garage...the Jeep won't budge. I even slightly spun the
| back tires trying to get the Jeep to roll backwards.
|
| I pull everything apart and take the rotors back to AutoZone.
| They double check the numbers and I insist that there has
| to be a problem with these. I run over to PepBoys and get
| Raybestos rotors part number 7142. I get the same results.
| I had high hopes as these were Raybestos and the others were
| Aimco (who ever heard of them). Now I break out the tape
| measure and start taking every single measurement I can
| think of comparing the original rotors to the new ones.
| If you place the rotors 'upside' down with the lug holes
| flat on the workbench and then measure up to the surface
| of the rotor, both the Aimco 5115 and Raybestos 7142 measure
| 3 inches where the original rotors measures 2 3/4 inches!
| The 1/4 inch loss is huge. What I had done was when I put
| the tires back on, torqueing the lug nuts down pushed the rotors
| snug into the backplate so much that they would not even turn.
|
| At this point, I visit the Raybestos site and find that the
| rotor they list for the 2002 Wranger is p/n 76923. PepBoys
| doesn't stock this one (of course), but the parts guy was kind
| enough to point me to a local parts wholeseller that did have
| them. In the end, it cost me about $80 per rotor versus the
| $29.95 per rotor I started with at AutoZone.
|
| The point is, perhaps I can save some other poor soul from
| going through this exercise on their own.
|
| So for the 2002 Wrangler, get the Raybestos 76923 rotors!

Same here on a '00 xj. scratched my head to pieces on it until I got
smart and measured the inside opening. front wheels actually dragged in
the gravel when I tried to back up. what a fiasco is right.
