Odometer running backwards?
1993 XJ 4.0L 120K
Every once in a while I notice that my odometer runs backwards. I first
found this out when I went on a trip that I wanted to know the mileage for.
I wrote down the numbers before the trip started and checked them when I
reached the destination. It only showed that I went 40 miles (should have
been about 240 based on 4 hour trip). I chalked it up to transposing some
numbers when I wrote down the original mileage. But on the way home I just
happened to be looking at the odometer and noticed it was running backwards.
It does not do this all the time, but most often on longer trips with higher
speeds. The speedometer works fine. I don't plan on ever selling this
vehicle, but if I did I would feel guilty knowing actual mileage is not on
the odometer. Anything I can check to fix this? Or should I fix this? ;-)

Hey, don't think I didn't rub my eyes and do a double-take when I first saw
it happen. Again, it is not all the time, just on longer higher-speed
trips.

Two things come to mind:
1) . People usually pay someone to do this for them, you're getting it
done by your own car.....
2). Remind me not to buy your jeep based on the odometer ;-)

I recant my "It can't go backwards" statement, and revise it as follows,
maybe the motor that drives it has a flat spot, and it simply stops for a
moment, then restarts going the wrong way.
This sounds like a new speedo is in order ...

Sorry, I recanted my claim in another post that you apparently missed. The
old mechanical odometers can not run backwards, I forgot that yours is
electronic.
Basically, it uses a stepper motor of some sort, and each pulse is supposed
to cause a tick forward in the motor, eventually enough ticks make a mile. I
don't know if the polarity on the pulses can be reversed, but a stepper
motor could run backwards if this happened. My guess is that there is a
mechanical device that prevents the motor, or odo numbers, from going the
wrong way, and this device is broken or stuck.

What are the odds that someone previously rolled back the miles and damaged
the counter.?

It had 33K on it when I bought it. Problem could have been happening for a
while, but I only noticed it recently.
