think any engine is capable of 1700 horses on pump gas without a
supercharger or turbo? I don't think 1700 hp is realistic on any engine
without some kind of juice.

getting to the finish line first. Regardless of the venue, you must get
there first. Horsepower does not always result in finishing first.
Overhead cam engines have there place in racing. Whether you want to admit
it or not. They have won their share of races.
