Need Simple Carb for 258 Cu In
Please, if someone knows there I can get a simple Carb for 258 Cu In Jeep
engine that is only used as basic transportation for getting around the
farm(off road use only no plates). Much of the pollution stuff has already
been removed or is not working so a simple carb w/o all that stuff would be
great.
Thanks

Re: Need Simple Carb for 258 Cu In
Your problems could be computer related if the Jeep is newer than 81.
I figure it must be by your saying a carb 'w/o all that stuff'....
The BBD carb is 'basically' the same carb with or without the stepper
motor on it. A pre 82 carb has no stepper motor for computer mix
control.
You can easily kill the computer and then just set up the BBD like a
'normal' carb using the mix screws hidden under plugs in the front
bottom of the carb. You might have to drill out or cut off the plugs
for the mix screws depending on the year of the carb. I can maybe tell
you which if you tell me what year.
You can make it a pre-82 by adding two wires and hooking the orange and
purple wires at the ignition module WAYYYYYyyyyy down under the washer
bottle to the orange and purple wires at the distributor.
This takes the computer out of the ignition, timing and carb loop. Here
is a link on that:
http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/ignmods.htm
You will have to reset the timing as it will have jumped about 15 deg.
A kit for the carb is in the twenty buck range and is easy to put in.
It is highly recommended you do this before trying to bypass the
computer to make the mix set stable. The computer set the mix
dynamically, without it a dirty carb is more of an issue for a stable
setup.
A dirty carb will seem to have a different setting every time you start
it up.
Pay real close attention to the idle mix tubes, they have crimped ends
that get gummed up so bad chemicals won't clean them so they need to be
physically reamed out. Oversizing them to 0.032" helps prevent future
clogs. A welding torch tip file or drill bit works good for this. Here
is a link on that:
http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/engine/carter.html
Also clean the gas line from the filter to the carb, it has a hook in it
that collects crud and the idle tubes will plug back up quick...
After that you can toss all the emissions junk in the garbage. I
recommend you keep the EGR, the PCV valve and charcoal canister which is
the gas tank and carb float bowl vent and the air filter hot air flaps,
they prevent carb icing on cold humid days.
That is all we keep on our Jeeps and we still get great numbers for our
emissions test, so a manually set up engine 'sure' doesn't have to be a
polluter! I got 15 ppm HC and 0.16% CO on my last pass. A friend wen
in on a later day and they couldn't get the machine down below 17 ppm HC
for it's zeroing in setting.... They were breathing worse than my
tailpipe in that garage by the end of the day....
Hope this helps,
Mike

Re: Need Simple Carb for 258 Cu In
Thanks for the reply. Sorry for not clarifying the problem in my request.
The Jeep is a 1979 CJ-3B(original was 4 cyl) and the engine someone
installed years ago is the 258(year unknown). Carb ID is 8338S E2 21 a and
has a servo. Problem is cold running and then runs great when warm. This
problem has been there for years and now need to finally correct. Some of
the electronics were removed from the engine so would like a carb w/o
electronic controls. Thinking I need to avoid using a carb controlled by a
computer or other electronics. If your carb fits the need, please, let me
know how to contact you for paying shipping.
Thanks,
Art

Re: Need Simple Carb for 258 Cu In
Art,
I've got one from an '82 Scrambler that is not controlled by a computer.
The carb tag is 8349S, K108A. It's about five years old, and I pulled it
because I put the Mopar fuel injection on. It's a bit dirty because I had
engine problems (blowing oil), but it's always started and run fine cold.
If you're in the DFW (Texas) area, you can pick it up for $15. Otherwise,
we can work out something with shipping (and me going to UPS :).
