One trans that you might want to consider is the bullet-proof NP435. This is
a cast iron unit that is almost impossible to destroy. I drug mine behind the motorhome with some of the levers in the wrong positions, and smoked the synchros for 3rd and 4th. I bought a small box of parts and did the repairs myself. A lesser unit would have a total melt down under the same conditions. This is a 4-spd model that has a low gear of 6.69:1. This very low gear is useful for all sorts of things - pulling your house off of its foundation, getting out and walking while your Jeep idles along beside you, etc. It will bolt directly to the bell housing, but needs an adaptor plate between it and the D300 tcase.
