Jeep TJ Manual Transmission question
97 Wrangler with 5 speed tranny
I would like to see if the experts in the group could point me to something
easy before I take this into the shop for diagnosis. When I try to shift
into first or reverse (SOMETIMES), it won't go in right away. I have to
wiggle the shifter around to different gears and let the clutch out a bit
before it will finally go into gear. Also, sometimes, it is hard to shift
into 2nd gear from 1st. Other gears are not a problem. Could this be the
clutch going out or the tranny going out?
Any ideas on what to look at would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dennis

Re: Jeep TJ Manual Transmission question
Dunno, but it kind of sounds like what my rig does...and has been doing for 6 years
now. Tranny seems fine, clutch was ok last time it was looked at (did put a fresh
throwout bearing in tho). Make sure you are going slow enough between first and
second and at a full stop before shifting in reverse. Also, try double clutching for
reverse.

Re: Jeep TJ Manual Transmission question
After replacing the clutch and slave (both of which were failing) my
tranny was still hard shifting between 1st and 2nd. Drained out the
75W90 and filled it with GM Synchromesh. Very dramatic improvement. 1-2
hard shift is gone. Shifts like velvet, even in cold temps.

What they said :-)
Pretty much normal for the AX-15 it seems. I put Redline synth fluid
in mine and it made a big difference. Still a little notchy when cold,
but once it warms up, it's fine.
