i want to calibrate the speedometer on my 86 cj7
I have a 86 cj7 with a t 5 tranny and a dana 300 transfer case with 32"
tires and 2.73 gears. it had a 31 tooth speedo gear in it. I have tried a 27
tooth and it made it closer but it is still off on highway speeds by about
7 mph. I found a website that says I need a 23 tooth which I think would
make it correct but I went to a jeep dealership and they said the smallest
one I can get is a 25. where do I go from here? are there any aftermarket
companies making these gears? I know I am not the only guy in the world with
32" tires on a stock geared jeep. any help would be great. carmine

Re: i want to calibrate the speedometer on my 86 cj7
Are you sure you have 2.73's?
That is unusual for an 86 with the T5. More like the one for the
automatic, that has 2.73's.
My 86 T5 has 3.31's.
To make sure, jack up one rear tire and put a chalk mark on the tire and
on one rear u-joint. Then rotate the tire twice while counting the
driveshaft rotations. That will give you the ratio.

Re: i want to calibrate the speedometer on my 86 cj7
Hello Carmine,
My '86 with a T-5, Dana 300 (and Dana 44) came with 3.31 gears as
well. Odd to have another gearing. Which rear end came stock on
yours? The AMC 20 or Dana 44?
