Gear and Locker time
I have a 2002 TJ with 5.5" of lift and Im ready to go to 35's. Only
problem is that I have dana 30 and dana 35 with factory 3:07's. Its
hard on 33's, and just would not cut it with 35's.
So, my big question is.... Can/should I attempt this ring and pinion
install on my own? I have done all other mods to my Jeep on my own
with out any real problems. Are there any special tools that are
needed?
It will save me about $600 in labor cost. But, $600 in savings may
cost me more if I fubar the install and explode an axle.
Any suggestions would be great. Also, who makes the best 4:56 gears?

I recently bought a Dana 44 rear axle with the stock True Track limited slip
te replace my stock Dana 35. I suppose this axle is strong enough to turn 35
inch tires ? But what about the stock Dana 30 front... will that be strong
enough to turn them 35's without upgrading it ?
Gears will be changed to, but not sure what to get yet... either 4.56 of
4.88. IN Belgium we don't do any rock crawling but mostly mud, so super low
gearing isn't good. I use the TJ as my daily car on the highway, so it
should be able to run using 5th gear again

The d30 is pretty good, although not as strong as a d44. You can gear it to
4.88 but no further.
Did you say what size you motor is? If it's a 2.5L, you could probably run
33s comfortably with 4.88. If it's a 4.0L, I think you could probably run
35s with either 4.56 or 4.88, depending on how much highway driving you do.
(I'm sure there are others here who have more experience with 35s than I do)
The d44 did not come with a tru-trac as far as I know. The tru-trac is a
geared limited slip unit. To my knowledge, the d44 only came with the
trac-lock, which is a clutch-pack limited slip and requires friction
modifier additive in the gear lube.

It's a 4.0L !
90% of what I do is highway since I have to drive nearly an hour to go to
work, and an hour to drive back (I do about 1.000 km each week)
And you are right concerning the locker, it's a Trac Lock... my mistake.

It's a 4.0L !
