Finally fixing it
I'm finally going to attempt to fix my leaky valve cover on my 85 CJ7
258. From what I've gathered here I should get a new cork gasket and
sandwich it between layers of RTV. Couple of questions: What should I
use to clean the surfaces that will get the RTV? Is there any brand or
type of RTV that is best for this or is it all the same?

Hi Jim,
You might think about not using a gasket, and just lay the blue
Permatex on a surface cleaned with alcohol, do not use gasoline as it
will leave a residue that the silicone will not seal to. The bead
should be about the size of a quarter inch rope in the middle of the
gasket area and smeared just enough around each of the bolt holes. Then
ease the valve cover down exactly on to the right position, first time,
no sliding, or you've wasted your time.
