emergency brakes...aahhh!!!
Okay, for the past few months I have been restoring a 1984 jeep cj7. It
has been going pretty smooth exept for the emergency brakes. I've read
the manual and tried to tighten the cable. I tightened it as much as I
can, but it still doesn't hold. When I press in the pedal, its really
tight, but the brakes don't hold. If you have any advice please send it
my way...Carnley588@yahoo.com....thanks

Re: emergency brakes...aahhh!!!
Have you checked the rear shoes? If they have excess wear they won't hold.
Have you adjusted the rear brakes? The auto adjusters can rust up and
freeze.
Are you applying the service brakes (via brake pedal) before you apply the
parking brakes?

Re: emergency brakes...aahhh!!!
The cable isn't the adjuster! The cable set is just for the initial
setup when everything is new.
The emergency brake adjuster is a star wheel you get at from the rear
bottom of the brake backing plate. You turn this wheel with a
screwdriver until the shoes just start to hit the brake drum, then back
them off a notch.
After the rear shoes are set, then you adjust the cable.
You will need to back way off on the cable to adjust them now. If you
don't the cables will be a pivot point for the shoes and they will
stretch and break.

Hi Mike,
Danny, could have some big problems if the emergency brake lever can not
return to it's park possition, allowing the shoes to set on their anchors:
