5-speed tranny whine-'03 TJ 4.0L
Hey Everybody,
The other day I noticed a whine/growl in the transmission of my '03 TJ
(5-speed, 4.0 L, 28,000 miles, Dana 44). I notice it at speeds of 55MPH and
above. Goes away when you let off the gas. It can be heard in both 4th and
5th gears but don't hear it in the lower gears - maybe because the engine
makes a lot more at 55MPH+ in the lower gears.
I've only had this TJ for a few months and it's possible the noise was
always there because when I noticed it the other day it was the first time I
drove it at highway speeds with the radio off. Is this something to worry
about or do they all do that at the higher speeds?
Thanks,
Ken

Take note of the engine RPM when that happens.
That will help nail it down.

Hi Doug,
Thanks, I just checked and it doesn't depend on RPM at all, only on MPH.
55mph + @ whatever rpm in 5th and 55mph+ @ whatever rpm in 4th.

Re: 5-speed tranny whine-'03 TJ 4.0L
I have the same symptoms with my T5. Whines at 45 mph in 4th and 5th gears,
but stops when you let off the gas. I'm not trying to figure it out because
I have a T176 thats replacing it (hopefully this weekend).
