1991 Jeep Wrangler, loosing spark
1991 wrangler 2.5 Manual Trans.100,000 miles, The engine has a misfire
while reving up in the driveway then holding at a steady rpm, no rpm
also, steady misfire, The engine will backfire out the tailpipe and
runs very rough, on driving the vehicle, taking off from a stop, the
vehicle will jerk constantly under a steady rpm, press on the throttle
and the jerking goes away until a steady rpm is met again, happens in
any gear, distributor rotor movement is there, but minimal.
compression 165 all cylinders,
replaced with name brand products:
ignition coil, wires, cap, rotor, champion plugs, fuel filter,
Motorvac intake and injectors, salvage yard ECM (same problem), crank
and distributor sensor,
fuel pressure, 40 psi running idle, pull vac. hose 48 psi engine idle.
ignition coil= 39kv, at plugs with misfire 4.9kv, timing light will
stop flashing.
no spark line on secondary waveform, primary side goes directly into
the firing event, no module timing control, timing advance is 12-14
idle and 36-38 cruising at 55. , I have seen alot of posts about this
style of problem, but no fixes, Has anyone seen this problem fixed
that has not posted the fix?

Re: 1991 Jeep Wrangler, loosing spark
Hi Steve,
I'll bet you'll find one of your spark plug insulators cracked. You
probably felt it give while installing it. The backfire tells me you
have that unburned gas in the exhaust eliminating any fuel, or injector
problem. It's only being ignited by the next firing cylinder. The new
ignition wires, rotor and cap, tells me there shouldn't be a problem
with cross firing.

Re: 1991 Jeep Wrangler, loosing spark
Thanks Bill for the reply,
I did find the problem this evening, I purchased this vehicle from a
rebuilder salvage yard, so I had no clue what needed to be done or had
been done or if anything was needed for this vehicle, the problem lied
in the positioning of the distributor, the correct position of the
rotor is to be placed just past 3:00 oclock position, it was at just
before 3:00 oclock position, Jeep Driveability
manual said to point the rotor towards the #1 sparkplug tower of the
cap, it cannot go there, it is either before or after, one Chilton
Pro. book I have stated that the rotor installed was to point to 6:00,
another stated just past 3:00 position, this vehicle and bookwork was
and is a mess. No wander it takes so long to get to the bottom of some
of the work. Engine runs like a clock now.
Thanks Bill, Steve Ayers

Re: 1991 Jeep Wrangler, loosing spark
Hi Steve,
That was not my guess. Your reply reminds me of the little tricks
done to cars in an impound lots that will be sold at auction. People
trying to evaluate the car they want to bid on will find it doesn't run
right, letting the saboteur to have it at lower bid.
