Hi,

I have a 2006 jeep liberty. It starts well when cold but all too often after running for awhile and shut off, it does not start easy. It seems I have to turn it over and release the key and try to catch it again before it stops turning over, but even with that, it would take about 5 to 10 trys. At least that is what seems to work to get it going again. Alternativerly, I have to walk away and let it cool. Rarely it works good when starting warm.

Any ideas would be much appreciated?

When the motor is warm does it turn over quickly or is it turning slowly when you try to start it?

 

it's quick. There doesn't seem to be any difference from when it does start cold or warm and when it doesn't start.

 

I do not recommend changing parts unless you can prove they are the problem, however, it might be an issue with the crankshaft position sensor. They can be difficult to diagnose, especially if they are only being a problem during a warm start as it will not set a code. If you can find someone with a scanner that will read live data you should be able to see if the cps is indeed sending a signal or not during a warm start attempt.

 

the other thing I forgot is that I have to pump the gas. I guess a bad fuel filter would be to easy and not the problem??

 

Ir never hurts to change the fuel filter, however, clogged filters usually cause problems at highway speeds before they cause starting problems.

Here's another thought, the next time you are going to start it with a hot motor, push the gas pedal to the floor and hold it there while you try to start it (if it starts let it go of course). post back what happens.

oldfart - I push the accelerator all the way to the floor but I have to bring it up a little before it starts but it is at least a short term solution for me as it should start with fuel injection without doing that. It does this everytime.

Ok. I will explain my line of thought. If you push the gas to the floor during the start procedure it does not fire the injectors. This is the procedure for a flooded engine or one that is receiving too rich of a mixture during the start period. My guess at this time would be that the computer is receiving incorrect information from the air temperature sensor or engine temperature sensor (just a guess remember). The way to verify them is to measure the resistance of them at different temperatures and see if they are changing and within spec.I don't know what the values should be but there must be a chart with the values somewhere on the net. If the values are not changing or telling the computer that the motor is cold it will inject too much fuel and therefore not start.

Hey guys, taking over for BrettS on this forum,
Seems like were having starting problems even under warn engine conditions.
Might be an issue withing the fuel system or maybe even ignition, I'd send you to a CDJ dealer but I know that might be a good ways away.
If that's the case, if you can get me some extra details, maybe I can take a look.
