I'm wondering if 16" metal rims will fit on my 2012 JKU Sahara.. I am shopping for some winter tires and not sure what size to get. Any suggestions or help appreciated.

16s would not be the right rims for your JK.
Follow the link below and you'll find Mopar 17" wheels, 3rd selection down in the "Wheels & More" section, that are meant for winter and off-road use.
There are others but this is what would be good choice if only for winter.
Your dealer can also help with the right winter tires as well.

You can save a fair bit of money on tires if you get 16" rims, as the 17" rims are an odd winter tire diameter. You just have to make sure that the overall outer dimensions of the tire are the same as your current tire.

I'm saving almost $100 a tire going this route.

 

Yes 16" will work fine... The Sport comes with 16" from the factory..

 

So 16" canadian tire steelies fitted with appropriate size tire would work fine than :) sweet gots to go shopping

 

We run 16" soft 8s here all the time no issues, and they look great.go with the Duratrac's nine combination.

 

Anyone know the part number for 16" steal wheels at Canadian tire that fit the 2012 unlimited? Does the 2012 use the same bolt pattern as prior years?

no to the part number and the bolt patern is 5on5 or 127.

 

Steel rims at Canadian Tire cost 79.99 for 16's and $90 for 17's

 

Option B, would be to go on line (Kijiji, Ebay) and purchase a set of "steelies" somebody's taken off and getting rid of. Factory stock on Sport, so guessing involved.
