Aftermarket exhaust for 2012 JK Wrangler?
Hi all...I am really looking forward to making my new 2012 JK with the PentaStar 3.6...sound as good is it's going to run!
Corsa exhaust is in the process of making a cat-back kit for the 2012 (both dual and single outlet)...I contacted them and they haven't quite got it into production...
Here's a link to the sound of Corsa's kit for the OLDER 3.8...sounds good to me...(imagine how good the 3.6 will sound!!)
http://www.off-road.com/blog/2011/02...rangler-video/
Here is the only company (MagnaFlow) making a 2012 JK kit so far, as I understand it...This is a video of their kit: not bad...(but Corsa's sound -even on the OLD 2.8, is better!)
I want a kit that will be":
a) street legal (ie: not gross-sounding or too loud)
b) be DURABLE and at least as low profile as the stock system (Corsa's system for the older motor is actually thinner than the OEM muffer)
c) be stainless steel / lifetime design and DECENT quality
d) NOT invalidate my warranty!!!
Looking for anyone's comments on this...I'm sure with the newer motor, and the street performance that goes along with it, we that don't generally OFF-ROAD our JKs will be looking for a good sound to go with our new motors!!

Hmmm, all the documentation I have seen and read so far on aftermarket exhaust for the 3.6 doesn't look good. So far no ones been able to prove that it will help the motor, but only changes the sound. I wouldn't rush into this until you can see hard dyno proof that its worth spending the money one. Poorly tuned exhaust can rob power..
Unless you can get a programmer (no one has cracked the code for the 2011-12) exhaust can't be tuned in.. The only thing you can do for the 2011-12 so far is change gears and adjust the speedo. All the rest is locked up in the PCM computer coding.
Not a fan of the sound of the exhaust clip you posted, but thats just me. Look for sound clips of the stock 3.8 exhaust with a Flowmaster 44..

Re: Aftermarket exhaust for 2012 JK Wrangler?
Hi from Toronto to Port Arthur/Fort William!!!
OK...I understand your point...but, basically, we know that Jeep must have done their homework on the PentaStar before putting it into the 2012 JK series...(witness the exhaust loop 'bugle'!!!)...
Consequently, I'm not thinking I'm going to get any huge performance advantage with any sort of 'cat back' exhaust mod - the advantage will be the sound.
We 'Jeepers' are not 'posers'...I will say that first...However, there are a LOT of people going to be never off-roading their JKs...in urban areas...I MIGHT take my new JK off road a little, in cottage-country...but no Rubicon-style rock climbing...so, what's my point? Well, we have to accept that a lot of 'us' will be driving on paved roads most of the time...and with the new motor...and its increase in performance...the JK is GOING to be measured on its 'sound' as well...
When I ordered mine...I test drove a 'sport'...with the PentaStar...listening to the exhaust...
Sounded 'ok'...but not terrific (I've heard PentaStar-equipped Dodge Avengers, for example...that sounded GREAT)...
One thing I noted was that there was far less 'exhaust hangup' on blipping the accelerator...than the old 3.8 motor had...(sounds a lot less pollution-equipment encumbered, in other words...and this is actually true in some respects, since the EGR system has been eliminated)...
I know, in my heart, that the engine can sound MUCH better than what Jeep has done with the OEM exhaust...
It's funny...maybe I'm exhaust-sound obsessed...but with all the changes to the new 2011/2012 JKs...I believe that Jeep has missed one EASY improvement...that is making the thing SOUND good!!!
Anyway, thanks for replying to me...hope to hear from you again...

Re: Aftermarket exhaust for 2012 JK Wrangler?
Understand your comments about the Flowmaster 44 series...very nice...have heard the clips now...
But, check THIS out...BANKS exhaust on a 3.8:
Listen on headphones...now THAT is a nice sound...Imagine that sort of setup on a 3.6 with the lack of exhaust 'hang-up'?
wow.
I want it. However, as you note...DON'T rush into this...probably a good idea...

Re: Aftermarket exhaust for 2012 JK Wrangler?
Hey James.. I know what you mean about the sound. I love a good sounding exhaust. My factory 08 Wrangler was quieter then the 3.6 so I put a glass pack on mid body and took the factory muffler off. Sounded more like a V8 with a nice deep note but it actually was too free flowing and lost power. I am a V8 guy at heart so that is the sound I try and get unfortunately its hard to find an exhaust for a V6 that gives close to that sound without losing too much power..
Bottom line is not everyone likes the same sound and as long as YOU like it thats all that counts.. I look forward to hearing yours and how it all works out for you when its done..

Re: Aftermarket exhaust for 2012 JK Wrangler?
gotcha on the V8 thing...I once (a LONG, LONG time ago) had a Ford Maverick with the 302 small-block...the car was hopeless...but the engine? I think I spent more money on the damn exhaust than the rest of it...and, yes...it was quick, for way back then (1976!!)

Re: Aftermarket exhaust for 2012 JK Wrangler?
Trying to find either BANKS or GIBSON here in Toronto...mission impossible, so far!!! (at least for the 2012's)
My dealer says that anything installed after the catalytic convertors that 'doesn't affect drivability' (whatever that means) will not affect my warranty...
I am waiting for my new 2012 Sahara...still 'on the line'...!!
However, I did drive 2 2012 JK Sports...one with the manual and one with the 'manumatic 5-speed auto'...You can tell there's a GREAT ENGINE in there...but it sounds crappy with the stock exhaust...I can't wait to GET the thing...and install the RIGHT muffler...
Gibson makes a new product (shown at the 2011 SEMA show) - a DUAL outlet muffler for the 2012s...looks great...but not available yet...
I think you're right about SOME Magnaflows...although I have one on my 2006 Vue Redline with the 250 hp Honda VVT engine...and it sounds pretty good...
Cheers,
Saharaguy (James)
