New member plus ZJ tech question: signal gremlin
Howdy - been lurking for a while now, finally got around to joining! Bought my first Jeep ever about a year ago now, and its been a great rig so far. It's a 94 ZJ Limited with the 4.0 and the 'AWD' transfer case--but it's been awesome on the trails and as a daily driver.
Plus, I love inline 6's. My last one was a Landcruiser HJ60 diesel, but the AMC 4.0 is better IMO (more power, torque, less noise, smoother tho I do love the old diesels...).
Anyway, I've had about a dozen 4x4s over the years, mostly Japanee but some cool ones as I lived over seas for a while. But I gotta say, the older, simpler ZJ is about the best fit for use as a utility vehicle, kid hauler, boat tower, and of course moderate to rough off roader...
So...on to my technical conundrum:
TURN SIGNALS!
More specifically, the turn signal relay in the glove box.
It won't stop clicking when the ignition is on.
The turn sigs and hazards work perfectly, only on when I signal, but the flasher relay is getting power all the time suddenly.
There are no other symptoms--just the constant turn-clicking sound driving me nuts.
So far, I have:
- changed the fuses
- changed/checked the bulbs
- replaced the flasher unit twice
- replaced the multifunction switch with a new $170 one (ouch!)
Still, the relay keeps clicking....
Loud stereo helps but I'd really like to fix it.
Are there any other relays in the circuit that might be the culprit, or is it either a short, or the computer/ECU/whatever its called these days...
Thanks!

I would check the wiring at the relay, ZJ's were famous for having poor solder joints that caused enough gremlins to drive a guy batty.

Thanks - might be worth a try. But I think the problem is somewhere before the relay: something keeps sending current to the relay.
Oddly, the clicking slows if I turn on the rear defrost, and slows even more if I step on the brakes...

The wiring systems in these things are so tied together that if you pull one relay you take one or two other things out of commision. I"ll check my wiring chart and see whats tied into that circuit.

Still no luck with the insane flasher relay. But i am saving money in gas by driving less [the clicking is that annoying].
So far I've thrown in two new flasher units, changed the bulbs, and installed a new multi-function switch, but the relay just keeps clicking as if the signals are on for no reason. The lights still work perfectly, it's just the flasher relay that keeps clicking for no obvious reason.
I'm contemplating a jumper or some kind of bypass.
Anyone know if it would may sense to replace the relay with a piece of wire with a little fuse in it? This way the flashing would stop, the current would be controlled, but I'd have to manually toggle the switch when turning (I could live with that over the constant clicking...).
Or is there a realistic way to wire in some kind of flasher unit bypass?
Any ideas welcome as I'm fresh out...
