Canada Which front axle do I have?

Well I am a little concerned about this. The PO said that the front drive is a CV unit and when I got her home and checked underneath, I found they are open ujoints. I am going to try and crossreference the tag stamped on the pumpkin, but I was wondering if anyone knew the ID and how to determine the ratio?

I also have the infamous 42re that has the common slipping disease. I noticed while underneath that someone "jerryrigged the bottom tranny line going into the rad and now it is leaking. checked the fluid level in nuetral and she was barely reading on the stick,
Added a bottle of Lucas and the slipping has lessend but still evident...I am planning a filter and fluid change along with adjusting the inside band as it is only first gear that slips.

Hard take offs and aggressive shifts to second are the only slip points, everything else works as it should...I will however adjust them both as per manual,,,

I am really happy about becoming a jeep owner and I am honored to be a part of the Great Canadian club...

the earlier Dana 30's in XJ's and ZJ's had U Joints on the axle which is stronger than the god awful mess that i've got in my WJ.

if you count the teeth on the ring, and the teeth on the pinion, or the stamp on the ring it'll tell you the ratio. I believe its stamped on the cover aswell, but that can be next to impossible to read sometimes.

my 42RE had given me problems in the past, i solved them by bashing a rock into it cracking my pan and housing... its being held together with JB Weld... and if it leaks im going to go thru the painful 5 speed swap... (cant get a WJ in a 5 speed so FUN!)

but the fluid swap seemed to make everything ok... seeing as i drove it to Canada and back with it leaking a bit lol

Thanx for the insight...

I do see the stamp on the pumpkin and will write it down next time I'm under her...

Canada and back from N.C. is a fair drive...

NC to Toronto a few weeks later, toronto to North Shore NB... Wheeled all the spots i had in mind when i bought the thing, and even made a few trails, took trips to PEI and Nova Scotia, then headed back to NC

On my way home I bent my Dana 30 after hitting a monument or 200lbs Buddha that fell off a truck in Massachusetts... (weather was a factor) 700 miles to home on a bent axle... boy did that kill mpg!

managed to get it straight... but its time to upgrade!!!

I've still got west coast dreams too... i was trying to get a job out in BC a few months ago, but they weren't willing to pay for relocation costs (distance is the same from NC and NB) but yea even like some of the classic jeep spots, Moab and the Rubicon trail... and a few spots between :-P

so far its all been on stock suspension... i dont know how i've got thru as much as i have and have some big plans for my rig... since im sorting out axles im going with something beefy under my WJ...

At the very least im going to swap for a High Pinion Dana 30, but im going to stiffen the outer axle by welding larger OD tubing, and new stronger brackets, stronger inner axles and a locker and regear it to 4.56, and install a Dana 44 rear... with the same things in mind.

Since i cracked my tranny im looking at installing a NV3550 5 speed soon if my 42RE wont hold with the JB Weld... im pretty much expecting to do this... its just that i've got to get a better job before i do such a thing LOL might see if i can score a 241 rock trac if i can put it off for a while... 4:1 would be soo much fun, i bet i could make my WJ lift tires without a rock after that!

If i had the money id buy Pro Rock 60's... but thats way overkill at this point lol

All depends on what kind of wheeling you like to do, I've had 30's and 35's for a long time and never had any problems with them. If your the kind of guy that has to bash his rig off of everything then definatly the 30-35 will calf before a 44. If your paying attention you can go just as far with the 30 -35 combo as someone with a 30-44 in a ZJ or WJ.
