Default 0700 fault code

So after my few days of stress about my truck, here is the latest.....

Changed the alternator, charged the battery, removed the heater control unit and ciggarete lighter units (i changed the heater control last week), incase they caused the battery drain....

Hooked her up to a Durango, and started first time.

Then comes on CHECK ENGINE, i ran the key turning diagnostic and 0700 showed as the fault.

When i put from park to drive, i feel a chuk - and it takes 2000rpm before i move, and the fuel consumption is sky high (even for GC!)

any suggestions?
thanks.....

0700 is a transmission fault...sounds like maybe a solenoid needs replacing? maybe the TRS?

I believe that part is for ZJ's and that the WJ's don't have a Neutral Safety Switch, but a Transmission Range Sensor instead. (not 100% sure)

I wouldn't be certain that that is the direct cause of the code, but I think its likely. 0700 is 100% a transmission fault code.

Have you noticed anything irregular about your shifting, etc? What transmission do you have? 545rfe?

This part can also cause problems with reverse lights (which is what I'm going through right now) and thats how I came across the info.

The P0700 fault code means that there is a transmission code stored that can not be displayed by the key turning diagnostic method. You will need to read the transmission code with a scan tool. The key turning diagnostic method only reads engine codes and uses the P0700 code to tell you that there are transmission codes active.

I6 engine = 42RE transmission
V8 engine = 45RF transmission or 45RFE 2003-2004

FWIW a 45RFE is the same as a 545RFE, mechanically. Not sure what a 45RF is. 45RFE / 545RFE stands for 4 / 5 speed, rear wheel drive, Full Electronic control system. The only difference between the two is the TCM.

But you're right that the 0700 code does not given any more detailed info than "transmission fault"....it could be a number of things, so replacing the TRS without knowing for sure might not solve the problem... however it is a likely source on vehicles of this age. A quick search online will pull up lots of threads with folks replacing either the TRS, or just the solenoid.

I'd have it inspected at a shop to find the problem and then maybe do the labour yourself if you really want to save the $$$.

I was looking at hollander and for some reason lists them listed as 45RF and 45RFE as does partpart.com.

I would get the codes pulled before throwing parts at it. The problem can be anything from the TRS to something as simple as wiring. Throwing parts at it can cost you more in the long run to get it fixed. Your Jeep is more then likely in limp mode which uses 2nd and 3rd gears only. Your gas mileage will suffer and in the end you'll save nothing. Find someone with a DRB3 and have it scanned.
