Default stuck in 4wd part time plz help

I have a 96 Jeep Country Cherokee 4.0L high output last owner was out 4 wheelin and said he broke tranny. But we took apart the tranny and found nothin wrong and figured he had no fluid in it cuz he said it didnčt need and fluid... So we put it back together and into the Jeep. After we got everything back together we started it up and noticed the 4wd part time light was still on.When I put it in N and push the transfercase shifter to 2wd nothing happened. Then I asked a friend who had a Jeep and he said to go about 30km and then shift it to 2wd. I told my dad who was helping me out and he said never heard of that and wont try it but when I was going back and forth on my street I went about 20km and it would turn off but then turn back on when I when from R to D. My street was to short and I cant drive on the road yet and my dad wont go and try it out on the road. Plz help any advise will help

Sounds like the linkage is out of adjustment. Check the fluid level in the t/case.

yeah you dont need to be going 30kph... you just need to be coasting, put the transmission in neutral, then try operating the transfercase while rolling (were talking 5kph)

if its binding that bad, allow yourself to coast to a stop, move the transfercase into 2wd, then put the vehicle in reverse, roll back a few ft, stop, and put it back into drive...

im sure you've checked the linkages and there working properly down to 4 Low...

my 2004 WJ was stubborn like this, always had to wiggle it out at crawl... as my girlfriend calls it LOL

Is the Jeep actually stuck in 4wd or is the light just on. Those switches fail a lot. Make sure your not just chasing a bad switch.

Wer'e just going thru the same thing with daughters `00 Cherokee. Going to try the reverse thing. Just had the fluids changed in the diffs and TC, can't see how they could have screwed that up. A question, does the TC use the same fluid as the diffs?

depends on the case, but in most transfercases its ATF+3 or +4 in newer transfercases... some require an additive aswell (247 and 249 cases)

Possibly the linkage is out of adjustment, mine was doing that after I rebuilt my 231, what I did was had my wife put it in low range, holding the shifter all the way back then I loosened the linkage and adjusted the collar back, and tightened it back up, has been fine ever since, could also be the switch, are u auctially in 4wd when the part time light is on? Like do u feel the truck binding when u turn corners? If not
It's most likely the switch is going haywire and shorting out onto something that is a hot wire,

Hope this helps, if worse comes to worse, just pop the linkage off at the t-case for the
Time being and smack it back into 2wd, also check your tranny mount, if they are gone they will put added stress on your t-case linkage and cause binding issues as well,
Nick
