Canada 96XJsport AW4 Swop To AX5 Transmission

hello there fellow Jeep owners. my 96 cherokee sport 4.0L HO which has an AW4 auto transmission. i have an AX5 standard trans and everything mechanicly i need to do the swop. iv been asking some friends about it, and iv heard a number of diffrent things. some say just bolt it all on and it will work, others say that bolting it all on is the easy part, and that my computer will have problems. i cant seem to find an end to my questions... iv also heard that there might be a way to trick the computer into thinking its in N or P, but i know very little about CPU stuff... iv got it all ready, and winter is coming up.. please if anyone knows for sure what i have to do, let me know. details needed.

yeah you go banana

Ax-5 = BOOM. use an AX15 or dont bother. The AW4 is an excellent transmission and I'd suggest keeping that. If you want to put some work into it for reliability change all the fluids(multiple times over a 3-4 day period to get out all the left over gunk) and install a tranny cooler infront of your rad.

First thing I do with an XJ that has an AW4 is install a tranny cooler and change the fluids.

i have a trany cooler. i dont want the trany. shift point are just gay. tourqeless. i want to have complete control over my shift points. now, im asking how to run it proper with the AX15(original typo). i need to find out if the TCU and all that computer stuff really matters, or will it just run like it should if i just install it and not worry about computers.. i already know what i want, i just need info to get me there proper like thnks was helpfull tho.

There are easy mods to make the aw4 a tiptronic so you can control the shifting. But anyway the easiest way to do this swap is to get an ecu/tcu from the junkyard to swap in

thnks. iv heard to leave to TCU in and just wire it to the clutch sensor so that when you push the clutch in, the computer thinks its in N, then when you let the clutch out, it thinks its in D. i think i need to find some wiring diagrams aswell the location of the TCU. if it would work without the TCU then i would just rip it out. does anyone know if its needed

I know theres some write ups on NAXJA about looping it so the auto acts on its own and doesnt need to be wired up to the ECU. Havent looked much into it.
